The Brazilian Storm blasted the opening day of competition at the Oi Rio Pro 2015, held in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.

The 2014 world surfing champion Gabriel Medina was able to take the pressure off his shoulders and win his heat against Freddy Patacchia Jr. and Alejo Muniz. Crowds gathered as he crossed the beach and cheered as he paddled out.

“I feel good when there are people rooting for you. I’m at home, with all my family [and] that’s my home break, so there’s nothing that [makes me] feel pressured,” revealed Medina.
